Less is more
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is one of the most important architects. He left the famous aphorisms "less is more" and "God is in the details". Less is more is motto of the minimalism. The word described their aesthetic tactic of arranging the numerous necessary components of a building to create an impression of extreme simplicity. But, the aphorism was not made by him. The term was made by Christoph Martin Wieland. He is a German poet, dramatist and translator. "Less is more" is a word being quoted by a lot of people now. The next aphorism is "God is in the details". Although many times atribuited to Mies van der Rohe, Gustave Flaubert, and many others, it is believed to be said by german Art Historian and Cultural Theorist, Aby Warburg. Aby Warburg, German art historian, notices of seminar at Hamburg University, Hamburg, Germany, and November 11, 1925. This is documented in papers at the Warburg Institute at the University of London, described in Dieter Wuttke, Ausgewahlte Schriften und Wurdigungen. I think that Mies van der Rohe said the aphorism. But, there is a recording that he ignores details of mechanical and electrical systems. In all cases, those aphorisms are alive.
